Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is another type of plywood. It is made of multiple layers of thin wood (along the same direction of wood fiber), assembled with adhesives through hot-pressing. Currently, the core veneers are mainly Poplar, Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus and Poplar mixed, Paulownia and Poplar mixed etc.

What is the difference between LVL and plywood?

What is LVL?

LVL is a type of laminate. Laminates are composed of two or more layers of resin-impregnated fibers or fabrics that are laminated and thermally pressed into a whole. Laminated products can be processed into various insulation and structural parts, which are widely used in motors, transformers, high and low voltage electrical appliances, electrical instruments and electronic equipment. Laminates can be plates, tubes, rods or other shapes.

Classification of LVL

The performance of laminates depends on the substrate and adhesive as well as the molding process. According to its composition, characteristics and heat resistance, laminates can be divided into the following two types.

  • 1. Organic substrate laminates-wood pulp insulation paper, cotton fiber paper, cotton cloth, etc. as reinforcement materials. The long-term use temperature can reach 120℃, and synthetic fiber products have been developed as reinforcing materials.

  • 2. Inorganic substrate laminates-use inorganic glass fiber cloth, alkali-free glass fiber mat, etc. as reinforcement materials. The long-term use temperature is 130~180℃, and even higher temperatures can be reached, depending on the adhesive resin.

Laminated plastic products are classified into LVL, laminated tube, laminated rod and molded laminated products according to their shape and purpose. Copper-clad laminates for printed circuits and adhesive paper capacitor sleeve cores as capacitor sleeves for high-voltage electrical appliances are two types of special laminated plastic products.

The usual length and width specifications of plywood are: 1220×2440mm, and the thickness specifications are generally: 3, 5, 9, 12, 15, 18mm, etc. The main tree species are: beech, camphor, willow, poplar, eucalyptus, etc.

Plywood is a three-layer or multi-layer board-like material made of wood pieces that are peeled into veneers or sliced into thin wood, and then glued with adhesive. Usually, odd-numbered veneers are used and adjacent layers of veneers are used. The fiber directions are glued perpendicular to each other. Learn more about plywood.
