Types of Plywood

May. 27, 2021

Take a moment to consider one of the most important aspects of your interior design project. Is it the way the furniture is placed, the type of paint used, or the woodwork? While all of these factors contribute to the look and quality of your home, you have to admit-woodwork matters the most. After all, those fancy TV cabinets, sleek modular kitchens, elaborate sofas, beds, closets, and pieces on ...... are all made of wood, especially plywood. Next, the plywood supplier will share them with you.

But do you know the different types of plywood? Also, you may have heard contractors and designers talk about the variable costs of these plywoods. Why is that? And, most importantly, do you know which type of plywood is suitable for what purpose?

Types of plywood according to the wood used.

Hardwood

This type of Plywood is made typically from wood obtained from Teakwood, Gurjan, or Birchwood. They are often also marked at 100% hardwood and are expensive. So if you are looking for something that is 100% original and has no budget constraints, this is the kind of plywood that you would want to get for your interiors. Edges of baltic birch plywood can be left bare or covered with edge banding. Thick face veneer allows you to sand well and without the worry of sanding through.

When it comes to India, Gurjan wood is mainly used. It is also considered to be one of the best choices when it comes to high-quality cordage plies. The hardwood ply is usually characterized by a naturally reddish wood. Moreover, the excellent strength, stiffness, and high impact resistance of the ply make it the first choice for heavy floor and wall constructions.

Softwoods

If you want a cordwood ply that is less expensive than hardwood, choose a softwood cordwood ply. Typically, these plies come from spruce-pine fir (SPF) or mango wood. Softwood ply is a cheaper option than hardwood ply. However, you must remember that it is not as strong as hardwood ply. You can identify softwood curtain ply by its slightly yellowish appearance.

Poplar ply

If you are looking for a ply that is somewhere between hardwood and softwood, then poplar ply is the right choice. Also known as "soft hardwood", this ply is moisture resistant and has excellent bending strength and durability. It is called soft hardwood because it is the least "hard" of the hardwood plies.

Because of its extremely high moisture resistance, Poplar ply is best suited for wet areas. In addition, the ply is light in weight, making it ideal for building highly structured interiors.

Alternative cores

You may be wondering about the peculiar name for this plywood, but there is a reason for it. Spare core plywood is actually a mixture of yellow and red light-colored wood. Thus, the cross-section of the plywood has an alternating core of yellow and redwood. Therefore, this layer is called the "alternative core".

Often, manufacturers choose this ply to obtain well-balanced plywood that is more durable than softwood plywood and less expensive than pure hardwood plywood. So if you want the durability of a hardwood ply, but don't want to spend a lot of money on plywood, consider this approach. These types of plywood will be perfect for most household furniture.

Commercial plywood

Simply put, this type of ply is called standard ply. Also known as MR grade plywood, this commercial plywood is resistant to moisture. However, you should not assume that the curtain ply is waterproof because it can withstand a certain level of moisture. Therefore, we recommend that you take care not to submerge the curtain ply in water.

Commercial plies are usually composed of hardwood and softwood plies and are mainly used for most of your interior design work. TV cabinets, cupboards, closets, sofas/chairs, etc. are all made up of commercial layers. This type of drapery layer is widely used because it is relatively inexpensive and durable.
